Service ActivitiesOperation Christmas ChildThe Samaritan's Purse International Relief organization runs a program called Operation Christmas Child. This year, cadets from the Kevin J. McManus squadron will put together a number of gift filled shoe boxes to be distributed to children in need throughout the world. Every year, millions of children find themselves without hope and in desperate situations far removed from the everyday life that many of us take for granted. This project will hopefully bring a smile to some of those children and help them enjoy Christmas as we here in America are so fortunate to do every year. For more information please visit the Samaritan's Purse website.POW/MIA ServiceIn conjunction with National POW/MIA Recognition Day on 20 September 2002, the Kevin J. McManus squadron hosted Colonel Vincent Fonke (USAF, Retired) as the guest speaker at our annual POW/MIA remembrance service. Col Fonke was shot down on a B-17 bombing mission during WWII, was captured, and spent 6 months as a POW in Germany. He went on to serve in a variety of positions before retiring from the Air Force in 1970. In attendance were cadets from Detachment 585 and the Duke University Naval ROTC program. All in attendance enjoyed an inspiring evening in which we celebrated and remembered America's heroes.Armed Forces Awareness DayThe Kevin J. McManus squadron is planning Duke University's first Armed Forces Awareness Day for late November. The purpose of the event will be to raise awareness about the Air Force and military in general. We have already begun working with the Army and Navy ROTC programs at Duke to put together the event in which we hope to set up displays all over the Duke University main quad that highlight the operations, leaders, and responsibilities of the various United States military organizations.Durham Rescue MissionThe cadets of the Kevin J. McManus squadron are beginning our third year of helping at the Durham Rescue Mission. We will help serve dinners and perform facilities maintenance. The Durham Rescue Mission serves the poor and homeless of the Durham area.
