To be eligible, students must apply in writing to the program early in the Spring of their junior year. Include in your letter the following: 1) a working title and brief description of your thesis project and 2) the name of your principle advisor. (application)

Requirements for Art History: The Methods of Art History Seminar or another 200-level seminar taken in the student's next to last semester at Duke, completed with the minimum grade of A- and an Independent Study paper written in the student's final semester at Duke. If the student takes the Methods Seminar, the paper shall be written on a subject of student/faculty determination. If the student takes another 200-level seminar, the paper should represent the refinement or pursuance of a topic within the same field as the seminar. The paper will be read by three members of the faculty: the student's principal adviser and two other readers. It must receive a minimum grade of A- for the student to qualify for graduation with distinction.

Requirements for Visual Arts: In order to qualify for the distinction project in Visual Art, the student must have taken at least half of the courses towards the art major at Duke by the end of the junior year. They also must have taken at least one upper level course in the area of focus with their advisor for their project. The student must have a well-defined project focused through an Independent Study taken during the next to last semester at Duke. The project is critiqued and evaluated monthly by all the Visual Arts faculty. The results of the project are exhibited on campus at the end of their final semester.
