GRADUATE RESEARCH TRAINING IN THE HUMANITIES:
A NEW JOINT INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM
                                                                      

Duke University, the University of Warwick, and the Doctoral Program Storia e teorie delle arti della Scuola di Studi Avanzati in Venice (SSAV), are pleased to announce an innovative joint program for doctoral training that will start in the Spring Semester of 2008 with the theme of "Church and City in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance." The program will continue in Spring 2009 with "Contemporary Art/Exhibition Cultures," and in Spring 2010 with "Art Markets."

The Spring 2008 theme will be Church and City in the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance , and will be taught by tenured faculty from the three institutions, including Bernard Aikema, Marina Bianchi, Caroline Bruzelius, Howard Burns, Donatella Calabi, Donal Cooper, Laura Corti, Neil De Marchi, Julian Gardner, Lorenzo Lazzarini, and Guido Zucconi,. The courses will be these:

•  The Friars and the City I (Bruzelius): architecture and urbanism

•  The Friars and the City II (Gardner): painting, sculpture and church decoration

•  The Churches of Venice (joint course by SSAV faculty)

•  The Economics of Creative Goods (De Marchi and Bianchi)

Instruction will be primarily in English but English-speaking candidates are expected to have a demonstrated competence of Italian and Italian candidates of English. This program is intended as part of the initial research training for M. A. and prospective doctoral candidates. The courses will have a strong practical focus which will include archival study, the examination of standing buildings, and the analysis and discussion of painting and sculpture in situ. It is anticipated that much teaching will take place on site, and that study trips will be made to Padua, Vicenza, Treviso, and other sites.

The program will be based in Venice between January and late April.

Candidates from other M.A. and doctoral programs are welcome to participate upon receipt of two academic references and a detailed letter of application. A completed undergraduate degree is normally a requirement for admission to the program.
