The Biology Majors Union is a student-run organization that caters for the needs of biology majors or prospective biology majors, and acts as an intermediary between the Biology Department and the students. The BMU organizes several events each semester:

  • BUGS (Biology UnderGraduate Seminar Series)
  • Dinners with professors
  • Annual BMU barbeque
  • Fall workshop: How to get involved in research

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to email one of the BMU officers

BUGS (Biology UnderGraduate Seminar Series)

The BMU organizes seminars during the semester to encourage interaction between students and faculty. This is a great opportunity to interact with some of Duke's most distinguished professors in an informal setting with other undergraduate students. These seminars give you the chance to learn more about the interesting research that is happening at Duke, to extend your biology education beyond the classroom, and to enjoy free food!

Upcoming BUGS: Monday February 13th

6:30 pm, Bio Sci 113

A seminar by Dr Kathleen Smith

"Into the Pouch: the evolution of development in marsupial mammals"

Dr. Kathleen Smith is a professor in the Department of Biology and the Department of Biological Anthropology and Anatomy.

More information on Dr. Smith and Dr. Smith's lab

Dinners with professors

Have dinner with a Duke professor and hear what it's really like to be a professor or a researcher, what area of biology they think is most interesting, what career choices they made, and what made them choose to work at Duke. This is a great opportunity to meet professors whose research you may be interested in, or who are teaching the biology classes you plan to take. The dinners are held at the Market Place or a location on West Campus, and space will be limited to the first ten people that sign up.

Annual BMU barbeque

Coming this semester! Enjoy free barbeque food outside Bio Sci with other undergraduates and many of the Duke biology faculty, and find out more about the biology major and biology classes.

Fall workshop: How to get involved in research on campus

Are you interested in working on your own research in a lab, but dont' know how to start? Come to this workshop to find out more about getting work-study jobs in labs, registering for independent study classes, and staying at Duke to do research in the summer. A biology faculty member will be there to give you advice, and upperclassmen students will talk about their research experiences at Duke.
