About Brownstone

  • What is Brownstone? Brownstone is a Selective Living Group at Duke University, compromised of around 70 total members and is currently housed in Kilgo houses K and L.
  • Theme Brownstone has no official theme or affiliation. We are a diverse group of individuals with different backgrounds and interests. In fact, the flavor of the dorm changes from year to year based on its current membership.
  • Activities There are a number of both structured and impromptu activities that members participate in every year. We hold section parties, dorm dinners, an annual trip to myrtle beach, retreats once a semester, among others. To get a better picture of what it is like to live in Brownstone, come talk to us during rush events.
  • Rush Brownstone Rush is a pretty laid back process that begins in January and ends around the beginning of February. Feel free to come to whichever events you can make it to. We don't make any cuts, so you can jump into rush at any stage of the game.
  • Selection The number of new members we can take in each year depends on how many current members graduate or decide to live off campus. To be considered for selection, simply submit the rush application that will be available at the end of rush, on this page. It's low-key and meant to be fun, so don't take it too seriously.
  • Dues Dues are collected every semester and are $60 for in-section members and $30 for out-of-section members.
  • Community Brownstone makes an effort to be a strong presence in the greater Duke and Durham communities. Whether it be through supporting other organizations on campus, community service events, section parties, we strive to make a difference outside of Brownstone as well.
  • Requirements Members are required to pay dorm dues every semester and live in-section for two years. That's all. This gives Brownstone members the freedom to be as involved as they want to be - but you will find that we all take a vested interest in our home, and are actively engaged in the dorm.
