History

Founded in 1989 by Adam Spilker, Project BUILD (pBUILD) is a community service based pre-orientation program staffed and run by upperclassmen. Over the past several years pBUILD has grown to include 80 freshmen and 48 upperclassmen as well as a 6 person administrative team (BAT, BUILD Administrative Team). pBUILD is an eight day program that runs just prior to freshmen orientation. Not only does pBUILD acquaint freshmen with the Duke and Durham communities through extensive community service projects, but we also work to foster a sense of family within the program by living together and planning numerous social activities for participants to enjoy after days of service. In just eight days pBUILD contributes more than 3,000 hours of service to the Durham community, helping its participants learn more about the organizations they can continue to work with during their time at Duke.
