(Coordinated by Prof. Kia Caldwell, UNC-CH Department of African & Afro-American Studies, klcaldwe@email.unc.edu; Prof. Claudia Milian, Duke Department of Romance Studies, egabara@duke.edu; Danielle Terrazas Williams, Duke Department of History, danielle.terrazaswilliams@duke.edu)

This working group will continue to interrogate key questions and issues shaping the dynamic field of Afro-Latin American Studies. The group will hold monthly meetings and invite guest speakers from Latin America to talk about their research, cultural production, and activism. They also plan to dialogue with leaders and activists in local African American and Latina/o communities to develop ways to increase collaboration with faculty at UNC-CH and Duke regarding Afro-Latin/Afro-Caribbean issues in Latin America, the Caribbean and the US . In addition, they will organize their second symposium in Spring 2008.
