Summer Intensive Courses in Yucatec Maya

The Yucatec Maya Summer Institute offers both a beginning and continuing six-week program to teach modern Yucatec Maya, a living language spoken by one million people living in the Yucatán Peninsula and Belize.

The Summer Intensive Courses in Yucatec Maya are major activities of the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University, and are made possible through U.S. Department of Education Title VI funds.

The courses are open to anyone who wishes to study Yucatec Maya. Interested students who are both full time graduate students and U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to apply for the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS). The Level I course counts as 6 credit hours and 160 contact hours, the Level II course counts as 6 credit hours and 140 contact hours.
