II. SUMMARY CHRONOLOGICAL TABLE OF PROGRESS TOWARD THE Ph.D.
These general regulations may be summarized chronologically as follows:

  • Semesters 1-5: courses.  In the first semester students must take the department’s pro-seminar, which will introduce them to the basic materials and methods essential for advanced work in Classical Studies.  In that semester and the following three, students should take at least one course in Greek and at least one in Latin; in each of the first two years students should take at least two history/archaeology courses (one Greek and one Roman). Students usually take four courses in the fall semester of their third year, but they should consult with the DGS if they choose to serve as a TA in that semester.  (The sixth semester, when students take the Preliminary Examination, is usually without formal coursework.)
  • By May 15 of the second year: completion of Reading-List examinations in Greek and Latin (recommended progress:  one RL exam by May 15 of the first year, and the other by May 15 of the second year);
  • By Sept. 1 of the third year, completion of the French and German Qualifying Examinations (recommended progress:  one by Sept. 1 of the second year, and the other by Sept. 1 of the third year);
  • By May 1 of the third year, completion of the Preliminary Examination;
  • In September or October of Semester 7: submission and discussion of prospectus of dissertation research;
  • Semesters 7-12: supervised teaching;
  • By two years (maximum four years) after completion of Preliminary Examination: submission of completed dissertation and final oral examination.

Departmental support is contingent on students’ satisfactory progress, which is defined as follows:  students successfully complete exams according to schedule; students avoid incompletes, taking no more than two in any one semester and finishing any incomplete within three weeks of the course’s end; graded course work averages above a B.
