A Short Description of the Majors

The Department of Classical Studies offers two majors:

Classical Languages
(Greek and Latin). Requirements:

  • Knowledge of both Greek and Latin through the second year (through Lat/Gr 76 or the equivalent, including Lat/Gr 63 or the equivalent; majors wishing to skip from Lat/Gr 63 to Lat/Gr 76 may petition DUS)
  • Eight courses in Greek and Latin, at least six of which must be at the 100-level or above (Latin 85 does not count toward the major)
  • One 100-level course in CLST (not Latin or Greek)
  • CLST capstone course, CLST 195S/196S
  • Total: at least 10 courses.

Classical Civilization (Ancient History, Archaeology, Literature, and Culture). Requirements:

  • Required courses:
    • option 1: CLST 11S or 153 (formerly 53), and CLST 12S or 154 (formerly 54), or
    • option 2: two Greek courses or two Latin courses below the 100-level
    • Note: the two options may not be combined; e.g., CLST 11 and Lat 1 do not satisfy the requirement.
  • Seven CLST courses at or above the 100-level, not counting CLST 153/154 (formerly 53/54)
    • Courses must be in at least three of the following areas: history, art and archaeology, literature (in translation or in the original language at or above the 100-level), and philosophy; in planning coursework for the major students should consult with the DUS as to a given course's fit in the distribution.
    • Note: CLST courses include crosslisted courses originating in other departments and study-abroad transfers
    • Note: CLST 153/154 may not be counted toward the seven 100-level courses
  • CLST capstone course, CLST 195S/196S
  • Total: at least 10 courses

For double majors in Classical Languages and Classical Civilization, no more than two courses may be counted toward both majors.

Graduation with Distinction. Majors may graduate with distinction. Eligible students must have a 3.5 GPA in the major at the time of application. Candidates will write a major research paper, as part of an honors research course, CLST 193 or 194. A committee of three faculty members will vote to award Distinction, High Distinction, or Highest Distinction (or none of these if the work is unsatisfactory) in recognition of the research project. Majors interested in applying should consult the Director of Undergraduate Studies Joshua Sosin by the spring of their junior year. Click here for full description.

THE MINOR

The Department of Classical Studies offers four minors:

CLST Minors

  • Greek: five courses in ancient Greek, at least three at or above the 100-level
  • Latin: five courses in Latin, at least three at or above the 100-level (Latin 85 does not count toward the minor)
  • Classical Civilization: five CLST courses at least three at or above the 100-level.
    • Courses must be in at least two areas: literature (in translation and/or in the original language at or above the 100-level), history, art and archaeology, or philosophy; in planning coursework for the minor students should consult with the DUS as to a given course's fit in the distribution.
    • Note: CLST courses include crosslisted courses originating in other departments and study-abroad transfers; Greek and Latin courses below the 100-level do not count toward the CLCIV minor
  • Classical Archaeology: five CLST courses in ancient art and archaeology, at least three at or above the 100-level.
    • Note: CLST courses include crosslisted courses originating in other departments and study-abroad transfers.
    • Note: The thrust of a particular course (e.g. religion, women in antiquity) may be more or less archaeological depending on the instructor, so that students should plan their minor in consultation with the DUS.

No courses used to fulfill the requirements of one minor may be used for another, or for the majors in Classical Languages or Classical Studies.
