THE COOK SOCIETY TODAY
The Samuel DuBois Cook Society serves an important function in this University by preserving our sense of the history of Duke as a once segregated institution transformed by the hard work and good will of a cross section of people, at various levels in the organization, who demanded the inclusion and acceptance of black people. Dr. Cook led in that effort and is remembered and honored for laying the foundation for Duke to become the multicultural, multiethnic institution that it is today.
Throughout the year, the Cook Society sponsors informal conversations, symposia and lectures on current issues, organizes social and recreational activities, and holds the annual Samuel DuBois Cook Awards dinner. Members keep in touch via an e-newsletter and information posted on the web site.
What Does It Mean To Be A Friend Of The Cook Society?
Joining the Cook Society could not be simpler. We only
need you to tell us that you want to be included on our roster of “Friends
of the Samuel Dubois Cook Society”. We ask that you attend our functions,
share your ideas and insights with the Steering Committee and contribute
whatever you can to the costs of our operations. We set no fixed dues,
but we are happy to accept contributions from anyone who wants to help us
be more visible and more active. The contribution of time, inspiration,
and money will enable the Society to communicate more regularly with our
friends, to sponsor lectures, discussions, workshops, and host special
events.
If you want to be kept informed of Cook Society
activities, please send contact information to Cook Society c/o Office for
Institutional Equity, Box 90012, Durham, NC 27705 or email laurel.matthes@duke.edu and ask to be added to the listserv.
