.Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The Samuel DuBois Cook Society announces the 11th Annual Awards Dinner to be held on Tuesday evening, February 19th, 2008 at the Washington Duke Inn.  The Society was founded in 1997 to honor the first African American faculty member hired and tenured at Duke University, and to recognize his contributions as a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees.  We are pleased to announce that Mary Ann Black, Associate Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, Duke University Health System, will receive the Distinguished Service Award, and Dr. Robert J. Thompson, Dean of Trinity College, will be the Special Honoree.

We invite your sponsorship of this unique event that promises an evening of camaraderie and conviviality.  As a sponsor, you will be given special recognition.  A dinner table for eight guests will be reserved in your name for a fee of $750.  As a special incentive, the sponsorship fee will be reduced to $700 for those whose reservation and payment are received before December 30, 2007.  For your convenience, a sponsorship form is enclosed.  Dinner invitations for your guests will be sent to you for distribution following receipt of your payment.

For the past several years, this event has sold out quickly, and we have every reason to anticipate the same level of enthusiasm this year.  The presence of students, faculty, staff of all levels, alumni and members of the Duke Community distinguish the Samuel DuBois Cook Awards Dinner giving it a distinct character and ambience that is profoundly representative of the “beloved community” envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and promoted by Dr. Cook.

In addition to the sponsorship opportunity, nominations are being sought for the 2008 Samuel DuBois Cook Society Awards which will be presented at the dinner.  Please consider nominating one or more members of the Duke Community who have reflected in their work or their academic pursuits the objectives to which Dr. Cook dedicated his professional life, to “translate the promise and potential of African Americans into fulfillment and actuality, and to seek to improve relations among persons of all backgrounds.”  A nomination form is enclosed for your use.  Please note that nominations must be submitted by December 5, 2007.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Benjamin D. Reese, Jr.
