 Established on July 6, 2000, at Duke University, the Chinese Populations and Socioeconomic Studies Center (CPSES) intends: to promote national and international scholarships on studies of contemporary Chinese populations and societies, and to promote training in the fields of Chinese populations and socioeconomic studies.  The geographic coverage of the Center includes Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other Chinese communities around the world. One of our general goals is to establish a research and training network for scholars interested in Chinese populations and socioeconomic studies around the world, in order to enhance scientific exchanges and collaborations.

  The center was established in view of the following developments:

 (1)  There is currently no major national or international center of such nature and capacity in the United States or elsewhere outside Mainland China and Taiwan;

 (2)  There is considerable faculty strength and comparative research interests at Duke University and triangle area who are conducting Chinese populations and socioeconomic related studies;

 (3)  There is considerable strength on population and socioeconomic research and programs at Duke University (Asia/Pacific Studies Institute, The Center for Demographic Studies, the Program on Population, Policy and Aging, and the Triangle Census Research  Data Center) and triangle area offering comparative analytic opportunities;

 (4)  There are significant needs for the training of researchers and scholars on contemporary Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other Chinese communities around the world;

 (5)  There is a significant need to develop and strengthen data-based policy analyses and evaluations;

 (6)  Strong linkages have already been established or can be established between Duke and triangle area scholars and scholars around the world sharing these similar interests and needs.

 The Center reports, through its Director, to the Provost. The Center (CPSES) is administered by the Director and the Associate Directors. The Director is appointed by the Provost. Associate Directors are recommended by the Director and approved by the Vice Provost for International Affairs.
