Our collaborators led by Professor Zhang Zhenxin at Peking Union
Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) have computerized exceptionally detailed and
unique obstetric records (including
mothers and babies) of 12,097 persons born in 1921-1954 at PUMCH.
Among these 12,097 persons, about 2,000 subjects aged 50 to 84 nowadays
are selected to participate in voluntary clinical examinations at PUMCH to detect coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension,
and dementia; current medical and socioeconomic data will be collected.
Data will be analyzed using statistical and demographic methods. We will
test Barker¡¯s fetal origins hypothesis against several alternatives. We
will pay particular attention to investigating how early and later life
factors interact, and to shed new lights on explanations and mechanisms of
relation between Intrauterine Growth Retardation and chronic disease in
later life.
