Calling on donation for Jianhong Hu, a Duke postdoc in Biology dept

Dear all Chinese fellows,
Jianhong Hu, a Chinese postdoc in Duke Biology dept, is suffering kidney failure and later infection in lungs due to immune system suppressing. We are calling on this urgent donation for him because his family has spent all they have and his life now is highly threaten by financial prob. Our understanding is money and time are the two subjects that will save his life.
Jianhong started working in our lab last fall. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with kidney failure by Duke Hospital. Since the waiting list in US for kidney transplant is apparently very long, he decided to go back to China. Jianhong returned to China for a kidney transplant this spring. Although he received a kidney, there have been complications. Because his immune system was suppressed to accept the new kidney, he soon caught infection in the lung. This sent him back into the emergency room.
Jianhong is now in intensive care. The Chinese system is such that Jianhong must pay for treatment, in advance, on a daily basis. There is a very real danger that, if he cannot make the payments, he will not receive the treatment he needs. The situation was apparently so dangerous that Zhengzheng went to China in a hurry two weeks ago.
Jianhong's family has exhausted their savings, and we're trying to find a way to help. Jianhong's wife, Zhengzheng, also works at Duke's microarray facility.
Jianhong and Zhengzheng have a young daughter. The daily medical bill of over RMB 10000 will exhaust the family financially, physically and mentally.
DCSSA is therefore calling on this donation to help Jianhong, our dear member and his family. You could help in either/both of the following two ways:
1) If you can afford a donation (even a dollar, literally any little bit will help), Pls make your check payable to Ludmila Tyler (Jianhong’s officemate in Bio) and deliver it to LSRC, B327, 613-8167. For donators off-campus, DCSSA can also help to collect the contribution if you want us to transfer your donation. Pls also make your check payable to Ludmila Tyler and mail it to Fang Liu, 130 Hudson Hall, ECE dept, Duke Univ, 27708
2) A bake sale for Jianhong will be held on Thursday, September 16th from 8:45 to 11:45 in both BioSci and the LSRC. Please consider stopping by with a big appetite.
We regret that Jianhong is suffering this disease. What we can do now is contributing a bit to save his life. He will soon be with us again, we hope. Thank you very much.

cook a Chinese dish for the world!

Dear all community member including your spouses, International House will be holding a big celebration to celebrate our 40 years at Duke on Monday afternoon, September 27, from 4 - 6 pm. At the party, they will present foods that represent the home countries of the students and scholars at Duke. They requested our Chinese group together to prepare a big dish for the world, that is enough to give 100 people a piece or small amount. In order to work on that, DCSSA is now calling on a "cooking committee" from the entire Chinese community including your spouses. The ingredients will be well coverred, so you do not need to worry about the cost. Ihouse also wants to display the recipe with the dish and later to make a "Tastes from the World" cookbook with all the recipes.
If you are interested in joining this committee, pls shoot me an email at js59@duke.edu and include your name & contact info.
