| The study of choreography and performance through participation in the mounting of a dance work from inception through rehearsal to performance. A work will be set on the students and rehearsed in preparation for 5-6 possible performances at the end of the term. | An in-depth examination of the history and lifestyle
of American Sikhism through the lens of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation.
After an introduction to the basic tenets of the Sikh faith
and an overview of its 500-year history, we will examine the
life of Siri Singh Sahib (Yogi Bhajan). We will look at the
impact of his move to the United States in 1969, and his open
teaching of a Yogic technology previously accessible only to
the upper castes in India. His emphasis on developing and maintaining
a daily spiritual practice using the tools of Kundalini Yoga
and meditation will be the focus of this course that combines
one lecture/discussion with two yoga/meditation classes per
week. |

| An examination of the complex artistic process of performance necessary to realize the choreographer's intent; the development of interpretive abilities beyond the mastery of technique and style; classic and contemporary approaches to embodying content. Readings in the literature of performance and imaging; written analysis of performance; vigorously coached rehearsal sessions. Students will be expected to progrress dramatically in their performance artistry. Prerequisite: intermediate/advanced level of modern, balle or African dance technique. |

| Examination of research methodologies in Dance Studies; theory, history, ethnography, education, choreography/practice and therapy. Readings investigate methods of interviewing and documentation, participatory experience, in secondary research, and issues of objectivity in ethnographic research. II. Students develop and submit a research paper that formulates and researches an extensive individual project completed in 200T (Senior Project). Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing, Dancce 101 and one additional course in dance history, or theory or world cultures of dance. |
