Progressive Meeting Minutes- January 13, 2002

7:09 FLOC Presentation
-Mariano’s story shows how unconcerned farmers can endanger the lives and

livelihoods of farmworkers and get away with violating federal labor laws
-Jim Wilkerson choose to pull Mt. Olive pickles from Duke in solidarity with FLOC’s current campaign against the company, but is now considering revoking that decision due to pressure from Mt. Olive
-Students are encouraged to write non-combative letters to Wilkerson in support of his decision to pull Mt. Olive
-FLOC would like Duke to sponsor a picket at a Kroger store as part of an ongoing campaign to picket at one store every Thursday until they stop selling Mt. Olive. Nick Wood is main contact person for this campaign.
-Students at meeting filled out Kroger comment cards to ask them to remove Mt. Olive products

-Meeting Wednesday at 7 in GA down under to plan our involvement in this campaign

7:35 MLK rally
-There will be a one hour discussion at 10am on MLK to be planned by Progressive
-Potential for a rally/SpeakOut, vaguely about social justice
-Topics: hate crimes/Mike Reedy, labor issues, potential DSG legislation on hate crimes
-Target cultural groups for involvement

8:05 Charter and Constitution
-next meeting will ratify constitution by consensus

8:11 Campus Employment Task Force
-Creating a permanent task force of employees, students, and faculty to be consulted about all aspects of campus employment
-Big issue = OUTSOURCING!!
-Will be handled through SERC, SERC meeting Tuesday at 10:30 in the alumni lounge

8:15 Progressive joining JwJ
-$100 annual membership fee and will send representatives to bimonthly meetings
-would have Progressive peeps go to coalition members events and members come to our events
-some Progressive kids already represented on Worker’s Rights Board
-agreed by consensus to join JwJ
-Theresa would like every progressive student group at Duke to also join JwJ, but group consensus was that this would cause logistical problems and overrepresentation of Duke undergrads

8:25 Activities Fair
-Wednesday from 11-1, registration at 10:30
-passed around sign-up sheet, will table for entire time
-see Jonathan, jfh4, for Dirty South t-shirts

8:28 MLK Peace Rally in Raleigh
-MLK Gardens at 11:30 Saturday, March to Capital Bldg. And Rally
-Transportation is available, Allison or Gray will send an email
-Civil disobedience protest at Ft. Bragg

-Jilly will bring potential constitution for approval at next meeting

8:33 Farmworker Awareness Week
-Rural Health Coalition Meeting at 9pm in 114 Carr on 1/22 to plan events

8:35 USAS Report-back
-4 Progressive students went to USAS leadership retreat last weekend
-Indonesia Campaign
~an independent union trying to establish itself in a factory in Indonesia, and there are allegations of union-busting
~WRC starting an investigation
~Natalie is sending a letter of solidarity to the workers with the picture of us that we took at the meeting
-BJ&B Campaign oat a BJ&B factory in the Dominican Republic all union organizers of an independent union that is trying to form have been fired ocampaign is heating up! (caliente!)
-Duke is being considered as a potential site for USAS national conference this summer. would require that 8-10 people stay here to organize for it -USAS is seeking new members of the international solidarity committee and coordinating committee, see Natalie, nl12, for more information

8:48 New Era Strike
-Workers at a New Era plant in Derby have been on strike for 6 months
-Duke has suspended our contract with New Era until the administration gets independent confirmation of the acceptability of the working conditions in the Derby plant
-Another plant in Bangladesh has also been identified as violating labor standards, so should we pressure the administration to suspend the contract until the labor issues are resolved there too?
