Thank you for your interest in the Department of Theater Studies at Duke University.

The Theater Studies department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.  Graduate degrees are not offered by the department.

Undergraduate applicants with experience in theater are invited to submit supplementary materials to be considered by the Theater Studies faculty in the course of evaluating applications for admission. The faculty's evaluation of supplementary materials is considered by the Undergraduate Admissions staff only in cases where the evaluation would strengthen the overall case for admission.  See below for information on how to prepare and submit supplementary materials.

Theater Studies scholarships are available to incoming students who qualify for financial aid.

If you wish to obtain an application form for admission to Duke University or seek other information about Duke, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on the web or by writing

Guidelines for Supplementary Materials

Please include in your application to the Admissions Office a one-page summary of your experience in the theater.  In addition, you may submit any of the following:
An example of your critical writing: for example, a theater-related essay that you have written for a class.
An example of your creative writing in theater: for example, a one-act play.
An example of your work as a director: for example, a one- to two-page statement about a play that you have directed, discussing your approach, process, and result.
An example of your acting: for example, an audition videotape.  The videotape should include a brief introduction and one or two monologues.  Please do not send excerpts from productions.
An example of your work as a designer, theater technician, or manager.  You might send a portfolio of photographs or slides of design/technical work, or an excerpt from a stage manager's promptbook.

Please label all materials clearly with your full name.

If you have any questions about these guidelines, please contact Dierdre Shipman at 919-660-3345 or via email at shipm003@duke.edu .
