There are three levels of Graduation with Distinction in the Department of Theater Studies: Distinction, High Distinction, and Highest Distinction
Procedure for selection of students
Students with at least a B average in their Theater Studies courses are eligible to apply for a project. They should become familiar with the Policies for Graduation with Distinction in Theater Studies listed below and acquire an application form from the director of undergraduate studies or his or her assistant or download a form here. The project needs the approval of the project supervisor who has been chosen and the director of undergraduate studies. All projects need to be approved by registration in the spring semester of the year prior to the project.
Expected product
Students may pursue a project in writing, directing, design, acting, dramatic literature, theater history, or dramatic theory. All projects must have a research component and a substantial written project. Projects may also have a production component.
Evaluative body
A committee will be comprised of the project supervisor, the director of undergraduate studies, and a third faculty member in Theater Studies or a related field approved by the director of undergraduate studies.
Evaluation procedure
Students' written work and production projects will be reviewed by the committee. A conference with the student and the committee after the committee has evaluated the written work and project will be part of the evaluation process. The jury will decide whether distinction is awarded.
Levels of distinction
If distinction is awarded, then the jury described above will also determine whether the project earns Distinction, High Distinction, or Highest Distinction.
Prerequisites and Credits
No special courses are required, though there are prerequisites for distinction projects which must be taken by the end of the student's junior year. Distinction projects are granted one course credit in the fall (Theater Studies 197) and the remaining work will be completed in conjunction with Senior Colloquium in the spring.
