POLICY ON INDEPENDENT STUDY IN THEATER STUDIES
Independent Study is advanced inquiry into material that a student has already encountered through course work.
Independent study proposals are accepted during pre-registration, registration, and through drop-add (which ends the second week after the first day of classes). Proposals are not accepted after drop-add. Each proposal must be approved and signed by the supervisor of the independent study project and by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Proposal forms are available here and in the Theater Studies office in 208 Bivins.
To qualify for Independent Study in a particular area (see below), a student must have received a B or above in the following Theater Studies courses:
Acting 145S, 1 of 146S-151S
Directing 145S, 155S
Playwriting/Dramatic Writing 135S, 136S
Screenwriting 135S, 137S
Design 92S, 161S or 169S
Literature 118, 121
Producing 163S
Voice and Speech 145S, 148S
Every Independent Study will involve research and a writing project. There are two types of Independent Study available in the Department of Theater Studies:
191 is an intensive course that culminates in a research project. Students can fulfill their research requirement (C2000) and earn a full-course credit.
192A is a guided reading/tutorial with a final project (half-course credit).
Both a reading list and a description of the writing project must be submitted with the Independent Study proposal form. Students are expected to have tutorials with their supervisors at least once every two weeks.
