Department of Theater Studies Plans Rich 2005-06 Season
Durham, N.C. - Duke's Department of Theater Studies has planned a diverse season for theater-goers, according to John Clum, department chair. "Our Theater Studies productions will involve multiple faculty and students in special interdisciplinary enterprises, and three of our outstanding seniors will direct productions as well. Our student group, Duke Players, will present Lab Theater in the fall and spring, and again, we will present original plays by students in our annual New Works Festival," says Clum.
In the fall, Ellen Hemphill, Artistic Director of Archipelago Theatre and long-time Lecturing Fellow in Theater Studies, will direct The Trojan Women, based on a new adaptation/translation of the Euripides' play, by Alan Shapiro, William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with Duke's own Peter Burian, chair of Classical Studies and professor of Comparative Literatures and Theater Studies. A musical score by New York based composer Alison Leyton-Brown will be an integral part of the production, and faculty member Jan Chambers will be the production designer.
In the spring, Professor Jody McAuliffe will direct her new translation of Gogol's classic farce, The Inspector General. She will call her adaptation The Special Prosecutor. Theater Studies alumnus Jim Findlay, now designer for the distinguished New York Wooster Group, will design the production.
The three student-directed productions from senior honors candidates include The Walls by Griselda Gambaro, directed by Marshall Botvinick, Loyal Women by Gary Mitchell, directed by Vanessa Rodriguez, and Works by Ludmila Petrushevskaya directed by Bridget Bailey. Duke Players will present their lab productions in the fall and spring. Titles are yet to be determined. The New Plays Festival will occur in the spring and will feature original plays from students. A Shakespeare class in the fall and a musical theater class in the spring will give culminating performances as well.
Following is the season listing. Please check the Theater Studies website for any schedule changes. www.duke.edu/web/theaterstudies . Tickets can by purchased at University Box Office (919-684-4444 or www.tickets.duke.edu).
