Northern Irish Drama Comes to Duke
Durham, N.C. - The Duke Department of Theater Studies will present Loyal Women by Northern Irish playwright Gary Mitchell. Vanessa Rodriguez (T'06) will direct the play. Set among the criminals and paramilitaries of today's Northern Ireland, Mitchell takes the audience behind the scenes and behind the politics to show how women live, and he examines how responsible they may be for their own repression and suffering.
"Mitchell makes an interesting choice when he tells the story from the female perspective, because we are now confronted with both the enduring violence of the Northern Irish struggle and the ties of the home and family," says Rodriguez. "The characters in the show are very real and very similar to our own mother or sister or father or best friend, yet each has a hidden life, a hidden truth."
Loyal Women will play in Sheafer Theater in the Bryan Center on Duke's West Campus Feb. 9-11 at 8 pm and Feb. 12 at 2 pm.
Tickets: $5.00 general admission; $3.00 students and senior citizens. Please check the Theater Studies website for any schedule changes. www.duke.edu/web/theaterstudies. Tickets can by purchased at University Box Office (919-684-4444 and www.tickets.duke.edu).
