Athletics and Campus Services

Vice President: Jesse Longoria

Completed Projects:

  • More parking options open to students at night and on weekends
  • Better communication of parking changes to the student body through an online matrix
  • The addition of a science drive bus stop servicing the blue zone and Edens Quad
  • Reviewed the quality of the gym and have helped implement changes which improve student experience while at the gym. This involves a new lounge area near the courts, radio services in the weight room, better towel services
  • Worked with independent students to aide in the creation of a student volunteer walking escort program
  • The addition of undergraduate students to the parking appeals board

Projects in Progress:

  • A police Code of Conduct which clearly defines the role of officers and what can be expected during officer student interaction
  • Continue safety tours but with the addition of sustainability. Create a committee made up of both students and administrators which not only identify problem areas on campus but does something to ensure that they are fixed
  • Working with the department of Transportation for Duke to investigate the safe ride program. Investigate ways in which we can increase the efficiency of the program therefore benefiting students
  • Better transfer of information between the police and students concerning incidents. This concerns not only information which educates students on how to practice the highest level of safety possible but also educates students concerning incidents which have already occurred so they can be avoided in the future
  • Working to install multimedia entertainment to Wilson Recreational Facilities. This involves the installation of TV's and radio receivers to the treadmill/bike areas.
  • Reviewing the possibility of a late night option on the Freshman meal plan.
  • Reviewing the hours of operation for eateries which operate late at night. Working to extend the hours of the Perk so students who desire coffee while in the library after 12:00 do not have to walk to Rick's Diner

Committee Description:

The Athletics and Campus Services Committee of the Duke Student Government is geared toward producing tangible results for the Duke Campus concerning Safety, Parking, Transit, Dining, Facilities, and Athletics. We work along side administrators to find solutions which directly address the concerns of the entire Duke student Body.

Safety is our top priority. We must ensure that the entire Duke Campus is a safe place in which anyone feels comfortable at all hours of the day. Through discussion with Police Chief Birkhead and Vice President of Campus Services Kemel Dawkins, we are pursuing long term lighting standards and increased police presence, especially in areas which have been identified as unsafe areas.

We are working on initiatives concerning Campus transportation. We work to ensure that bus schedules are in place which alleviate the stress of a student's busy schedule, never becoming a burden. We also work to find solutions to the parking issues on campus. We must streamline the flow of transit information on campus. We will work to address these issues and also ensure when a certain mode of travel is not going to be available to students that they have been informed properly and can plan accordingly. Students who do run into problems must have a viable process in place through which they can inform the administration of their problems and even sometimes file appeals.

Dining is new the the Athletics and Campus Services Committee this year. We will work with the Duke University Dining Advisory Committee to ensure that students are given a wide variety of choice. The Duke student population is very diverse and their differing desires need to be addressed in all areas, especially dining. We will also investigate the dining plans available to students and search for ways in which they can be improved.

We are also currently working with the administration to improve the athletic facilities. This begins with bringing Wilson gym up to date with the best technology available in gyms across the country. We will work to increase the gym hours to better acclimate itself to the busy student schedules.

We are constantly working to improve the Duke facilities available to students. We are addressing issues such as the lack of a computer cluster in the Byran Center. We are working to improve facilities such as these, but often we do not know about all of the concerns about specific facilities on campus. Please feel free to post any concerns you have on the Athletics and Campus Services Committee message board or write or anyone on the committee an email with your concerns. Whether it is an idea or something that just need fixing we want to help and make sure everyone's voices are hears and everyone's daily experiences are maximized.
