the Duke democrats

A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Duke Democrats is the undergraduate student-arm of the Democratic Party at Duke University. We are dedicated to promoting progressive values and advancing the candidates and positions of the Democratic Party at Duke.

Our activities include registering students to vote, promoting Democratic candidates on campus, planning and orchestrating partisan and non-partisan progressive events, and producing a collaborative publication called The Campus Blue Print with the UNC Young Democrats.

In the 2008 Election we helped organize the Duke Community for the Obama-Biden and other Democratic campaigns and the results reflect our hard work:

In 2008 the Duke Democrats registered 1,838 Duke students to vote in

    Durham County.

In the 2008 May Democratic Primary turnout in Precinct 5 (West and

Central Campus) was only 25.47% and turnout in Precinct 2 (East Campus

and surrounding neighborhoods) was 41%. But in the General Election

turnout rose to 62.15% in Precinct 5 and 68.24% in Precinct 2.

According to a study by one Duke professor, over 85% of current Duke

undergraduates and an amazing 90% of registered freshman voted (many

students who have long since graduated are still on the rolls which

complicates the Board of Election’s official precinct turnout figures).

We, the future of the Democratic Party, take ownership of our party at Duke as young Americans eager to ensure a brighter tomorrow with broad prosperity and a more peaceful world.

Our chief mission, as an arm of the Democratic Party, is to help elect Democrats to public office.

But our larger mission on campus is making our generation the most progressive and Democratic (big D sense) in history by engaging students and bringing them into the party as college students.

Thank you,

Ben Bergmann

President, Trinity ‘11
