PATH TO ELEMENTARY LICENSURE

To become eligible for North Carolina Level A Certification for grades K-6, you must successfully complete those courses required by Duke in General Studies, courses required by your major, and certain courses in the area of professional knowledge. Your Long-Range Plan should indicate courses you will use to complete the requirements for General Studies and the major. This checklist outlines courses necessary for certification at the elementary level.

The Elementary Teacher Preparation Program is designed to help candidates master certain Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions in addition to the Duke University Teacher Preparation Knowledge, Skills, and Disposition for all candidates (described here).

Students must meet the requirements of their chosen major.

Coursework and field experiences in the professional knowledge are sequenced; please discuss the sequence with an advisor. A course may meet more than one requirement; for example, many Education courses satisfy Curriculum 2000 requirements.

Elementary Teacher Preparation Program Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions

All ETPP Candidates will:

1. Know and understand English language arts and literacy
2. Know and understand major math concepts
3. Know and understand major science concepts
4. Know and understand major social studies concepts
5. Understand major healthful living concepts
6. Understand basic arts concepts
7. Use developmentally appropriate strategies
8. Use instruction that builds on students' existing language skills
9. Understand and use major processes in math instruction
10. Provide active inquiry experiences in science instruction
11. Connect social studies with the broader curriculum
12. lntegrate arts
13. Integrate healthful living
14. Develop strategies to address controversial issues
15. Encourage underrepresented groups
16. Develop as leaders in their school and community
17. Understand safety and liability issues
