STEPS IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Speak with your faculty advisor/s concerning your academic and career interests. Advisors in the Academic Advising Center will help you explore options.
  2. If you wish to set up an individual conference to discuss your interests, you may contact Dr. Jan Riggsbee (919-660-3077) or come by the office in 213 W. Duke Building. During this conference you can discuss the program requirements, goals of the program, and application process.

APPLICATION TO THE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION

  1. Applicants to the elementary certification program complete a written application. Stop by 213 West Duke Building to pick up a hard copy of the application or download an application from this web site.   2. Applications are accepted during the student's sophomore year and as space allows in the fall of the junior year. Because enrollment is limited, you are encouraged to apply early. For more information about the application process, contact Dr. Jan Riggsbee (919-660-3077)

AFTER APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM

  1. After your application materials have been reviewed, you will have an individual interview with the Elementary Program Admissions Committee. Interviews will be held in the spring semester of the sophomore year, and as space allows in fall semester of of the junior year.
  2. After your interviews, you will be notified whether you have been accepted as a candidate for teacher certification. Accepted candidates are assigned a Teacher Preparation Program advisor with whom they meet each semester to discuss their progress.
  3. An orientation session for all accepted candidates will be held in the junior year to discuss registration for the Praxis Exam and other relevant matters.
  4. Candidates are required to take Praxis I (Pre-professional Skills Tests): Reading, Writing, and Mathematics or provide evidence of scoring a minimum of 1100 on the SAT. This exam is required by the state of North Carolina for all students enrolled in teacher preparation programs.
  5. At the end of the junior year, candidates who meet all admission criteria are formally accepted into the Program.
