Secondary Teacher Preparation
Mission
In keeping with the mission of the Duke University Teacher Preparation Programs, The Secondary Teacher Preparation Programs prepare candidates for the critical thinking and decision-making that will be required of them as caring and reflective teachers. Candidates enhance their strong academic backgrounds by acquiring content-specific pedagogical knowledge and skills. They benefit from guided experiences with diverse student populations in technology-rich environments.
Licensure
Undergraduate students at Duke may seek secondary school teacher licensure in one of four areas: English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Upon the sucessful completion of the required program of study, candidates earn a North Carolina teaching license in: English, Math, Social Studies, or Science for grades 9-12. This is the only undergraduate program at Duke that results in state licensure. North Carolina has reciprocity agreements with most states. Students who earn their NC teaching license can also earn a Minor in Education.
