North Carolina Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan

The North Carolina Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan makes available $2,500 a year to individuals preparing to teach in North Carolina schools. All recipients are expected to obtain licensure from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and teach in a North Carolina public or charter school upon earning their undergraduate degrees.

The $2,500 per year is a forgivable loan. For each full school year that a recipient teaches in a North Carolina public or charter school (PreK-12), one year of the loan amount and the accrued interest will be forgiven. The fourth year of a full four-year loan is forgiven after completion of the third full year of teaching if the teacher completes all three years of teaching in a school designated by the state as low-performing or on a warning status. If a recipient does not begin teaching as of September 1st of the year in which she or he completes her or his degree work, the loan and all accrued interest must be repaid.

To be eligible, applicants must be legal residents of North Carolina and must not be in default on any student loans. Minimum cumulative grade-point average for undergraduates is 3.0.
