I began teaching in a small fishing village in Newfoundland (how long ago shall remain a secret!) and have since taught in such exotic locales as Mexico, Guatemala and Morocco as well as the United States. In between adventurous teaching stints, I earned a BA in Classical Studies and a MA in Teaching English from UNC Chapel Hill. Whereas I've taught students from first grade through college in a variety of subjects ranging from Reading to Theater, my current focus is teaching Writing to international graduate students (who are perhaps my favorite group.) Their perspectives, their voices, their efforts to succeed in the challenges Duke presents are a source of inspiration that I feel privileged to witness and be part of. Such efforts have inspired me to take beginning Spanish classes (in which I’m making steady progress) and Jazz dance (in which after five years? ten years? I remain a definite beginner). My favorite things (besides teaching) are movies, (and The Daily Show!), movement (yoga, dance, walking, biking) reading, many radio shows on National Public Radio, local and international politics, and writing. Among my least favorite things are many of the current US foreign and domestic policies. Our two boys are grown and are independent but since we like living with people, my husband and I currently have the pleasure of living with international housemates, who speak 3 different native languages and cook 3 different cuisines. In the future, I hope to teach overseas again, write a book, be a better dancer (which may be impossible) and learn to read and write Arabic well enough to consider myself an expert. |
