Janet MacedaJanet Maceda came to the EIS program in 2001 from Durham Technical Community College, where she taught all levels of ESL writing and speaking as well as The American Experience course co-sponsored by Duke International House and Durham Tech. She currently teaches advanced academic writing and academic presentations courses, and also directs the ESL curriculum for the summer Language Institute for first-year international MBA students at the Fuqua Business School. Her research interests center on cross-cultural communication skills and curriculum development, particularly the integration of new technologies into the classroom. Her most recent TESOL presentation was with Maria Parker in April 2008, "Enhancing Feedback with Audio and Video Technologies". During the 2008-2009 academic year she is actively involved in piloting the new “LINK” technology classroom in Perkins Library.

Janet received her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, did graduate work at Princeton University, and completed ESL certification at Duke. Before settling in Durham, she enjoyed careers as various as operating restaurants, breeding horses, and managing rock-and-roll tours. She has traveled widely in Europe, Asia, and Latin America and makes frequent trips to Washington, DC to check in on her daughter. Janet maintains active interests in sports and politics, dogs and horses, and reading mystery novels in her spare time, but enjoys nothing as much as engaging with international graduate students in the classroom.
