The primary mission of our program is to contribute to Duke’s commitment to internationalization by supporting the academic life of international students. We provide resources to
- help students succeed in their academic programs;
- build a community that actively seeks the intellectual and cultural contributions of international students and scholars,
- help those students and scholars be fully-participating members of the academic community and become global ambassadors for Duke.
In 2007-2008, over 200 international students from many different departments and countries are taking our courses. Here some of our current and former students share their thoughts about the US academic environment and cross-cultural communication.
Our program offers courses in both oral communication and academic writing for international students enrolled in graduate degree programs at Duke. Most students enroll in EIS courses as a result of the placement exam. However, we welcome all graduate students who want to improve their English skills.
We also offer individualized consulting services to departments for assessment, tutoring, mini-courses, and workshops.
