All incoming international graduate students whose first language is not English and who are pursuing a Ph.D., M.A., M.S., M.F.*, M.E.M.*, M.P.P., M.Biostat, or M.A.T. degree are required to take a writing and speaking exam administered through the Graduate School to determine placement in English language courses. You are exempt from this requirement if you are a non-degree student.

Writing Exam

Date: Monday, August 20, 2012
Time: 10:00 - 12:00pm  or  2:00 - 4:00pm, (determined at registration)
Location: West Campus computer lab. Exact location determined at registration
The exam consists of two writing tasks: 1) a summary and response to a reading and 2) an essay. The exam takes approximately two hours. You must bring a picture ID to the exam.

Oral Exam

Date: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 or Thursday, 23, 2012
Time: determined at registration.
Location: Wednesday: West Campus (exact location TBA). The exam consists of responses to spoken prompts delivered through headphones. Responses are spoken into a microphone and captured digitally.
The exam takes approximately 45 minutes
You must bring a picture ID to the exam.

You must pre-register for both exams. You must register for the Writing Exam here
or Register for the Oral Exam here beginning July 15, 2012.
You will need your Duke NetID to register.

Exam Results

Exam results will be available online before classes begin. You will be advised of the exact date and procedure for accessing your results at the exams. Your exam results will tell you which courses you are required to take and how to register.
