Rules of the Game

Dorms will be scored in three major categories: Energy Reduction, Events, and Recycling. The dorm with the highest total score will win free t-shirts for everyone, an ice cream party, and a cash prize! There are also individual prizes given out at every event!

Energy Reduction: Every week, we’ll get meter readings from each dorm, which will tell us how many kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy the dorm used that week. We’ll then compare these data to baseline readings taken in September in order to calculate the per capita energy reduction of each dorm. This means that all dorms are being compared against themselves, so larger dorms or dorms with AC or computer labs are not at a disadvantage. These factors will only be considered if two dorms have very similar per capita reductions. Also, AC uses a fairly constant amount of energy throughout September and October, so seasonal changes will not affect energy reduction. At the end of the competition, the dorm with the largest per capita reduction will receive a full score in the energy reduction category, and the other dorms will receive partial scores based on their reductions relative to that dorm. For a list of ways to reduce energy, visit the Tips section. NOTE: Water usage cannot be accurately measured and thus is not directly part of the competition, but hot water requires energy, so water usage will significantly affect the dorm’s score in the energy reduction category.

Events: We will give dorms points based on percent attendance at events throughout the month. Events begin this weekend and last until the end of the month. Points are distributed based on the percent participation of each dorm, so smaller dorms are not at a disadvantage. Look at the calendar outside of your common room and join the facebook group to stay updated on the latest event information: here.

Waste: We will hold at least one garbology event during the competition, in which we will take random trash bins from each dorm and count the amount of recyclables. The dorm with the lowest amount of recyclables will receive a full score, and the other dorms will receive partial scores based on their points relative to that dorm.
