Rules of the Game

Eco-Olympics consists of a set of waste, water, and energy reduction competitions between all the dorms on East Campus. There is a series of educational events designed to improve environmental literacy, as well.
The competition takes place between October 1st and October 31st. Dorms are scored on each competitive event and on the rate of residents' participation in various educational events. The dorm with the highest score across all events will 100% organic cotton Eco-Olympics champions tshirts and a $500 cash prize! Individual prizes, such as an iPod Nano, iTunes Gift Card, two ULTIMATE K-Ville tents, various gift certificates are also awarded for most events, generally through a raffle. The winner is announced as soon as final energy numbers come in from Facilities Management, which may take up to week after the close of the competition. |

1) Garbology - On an unspecified day during the competition, Environmental Alliance members dissect several bags of trash from each residence hall to determine what percentage of that dorm's trash should have been recycled. Residence halls with relatively little recyclable material in their waste score highest. If you want to win this one, set the tone in your dorm to keep recyclables out of trash cans! 2) Energy Reduction - Facilities Management uses historical data to predict normal October electricity consumption; the residence hall that reduces usage the most below their per capita prediction wins. The overall efficiency (or inefficiency) of the things that residents cannot control (e.g. building structure and air conditioning) have been factored in and will not give one hall an advantage over another. 4) Zero Energy Pledge - Earn points for your dorm by promising to unplug all of your appliances (fridge optional) before you leave campus for Fall Break. Facilities Management will be specifically monitoring energy use over the long weekend to determine if there is indeed a drop in consumption.
5) Eco-Trivia Night - Primarily an individual event. Students eating dinner at the Marketplace have the chance to compete for a two sweet K-ville tents by taking a 10 question environmental trivia quiz. The individuals with the two highest scores win, but students earn points for their dorms simply by participating. Bring your thinking caps!
6) Eco-Footprint Calculator - Take five minutes to calculate the environmental impact of your lifestyle choices and earn points for your dorm. You will also be entered into a raffle to win cool prizes! 7) Coal Pile Display - Come learn about the environmental, health and |
