Student Environment Sustainability Committee (SESC)

The Student Environment and Sustainability Committee (SESC) is a committee
dedicated to promoting a sustainable living, working, studying, and recreational
environment among all members of the Duke community. Overseen by Environmental
Alliance and supported by DSG, it consists of nine undergraduates who advise
DSG, DUU, and Campus Council in policy and legislation and help student groups
to make their events and practices more environmentally friendly. The positions
on the committee are as follows:
- A Chair who coordinates the committee and works directly with DSG, DUU, and Campus Council to write, pass, and create environmentally friendly legislation.
- A Vice-Chair who assists the Chair and reviews legislation to make sure it is environmentally friendly.
- A Grant and Funding Officer who attains and distributes funds for the committee.
- A Building and Grounds Advisor who investigates and implements way to make rooms greener, especially in terms of energy efficiency and availability of recycling.
- A Research Coordinator who coordinates research into the most environmentally friendly and cost effective products to use for events.
- A Consulting Advisor who works with DUU to provide green consulting for student groups and events.
- An Outreach Director who works to decrease waste and increase recycling at events related to K-Ville, Tailgate, Athletics, DiDA. and Greek and SLG groups.
- A Green Organization Coordinator who collaborates with the other environment-related organizations and departments.
SESC applications for positions other than Chair and Vice-Chair are due by
September 24 at midnight and should be turned in via email to mikael.owunna@duke.edu,
