LGBT Community at Duke

"Duke University/Duke University Health System welcomes employees, faculty, staff, students, patients who are bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender. Duke University prohibits discrimination and harassment, and provides equal employment without regard to sexual orientation. We also make good faith efforts to recruit, employ, and promote qualified minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans."

The mission of the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Life (Center for LGBT Life) is to provide education, advocacy, support, mentoring, and space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, questioning, and straight-allied students, staff, and faculty at Duke, as well as alumni/ae and members of neighboring communities. Through its services, the Center for LGBT Life presents educational, cultural, and social opportunities for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni/ae to challenge intolerance and promote affirmation, thus creating a more hospitable campus climate. To contact the center, visit: http://lgbt.studentaffairs.duke.edu or e-mail lgbtcenter@duke.edu

The LGBT Task Force has been the major catalyst behind the creation of the Center for LGBT Life and Same Sex Benefits. The Task Force works to create an open campus climate that is accepting and inclusive of various groups including LGBT people. The Task Force meets regularly and reports to the President. Currently, the Task Force does not have a web site. For more information, contact the Chair Damon Seils: damon.seils@duke.edu or Laura Micham: laura.m@duke.edu.

SAFE Activities in the Health System: Our purpose is to create a health care environment in which gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender patients and employees receive quality care and treatment; to develop and promote education and awareness opportunities for all members of the DUHS community. For more information, contact the Office for Institutional Equity at 684-8222.
