for offering each workshop to an audience of 15 –
20 staff members. In addition to these workshops, the Office
for Institutional Equity can partner with you to customize

ENHANCING RESPECT IN A DIVERSE WORKPLACE
What exactly do we mean when we say respectful communication is important in the workplace? How do our culture, gender, age, community and upbringing impact the experience of respect /disrespect? Workplaces bring a wide range of people together to work as a team. Despite commonalities in our definitions of respect, we also have our own individual expectations. Learn about the four elements common to all respectful communication, explore strategies for increasing respectful behaviors in the workplace, and examine approaches for responding to disrespectful behavior.
Time: 2 hours Audience: All Staff
BUILDING BRIDGES AND TEAMS ACROSS GENERATIONS
Explore and define the four generations currently in the workplace, and learn about the many challenges of managing a multi-generational workforce. Implications of feedback and strategies for problem solving will be identified through group activities and discussion.

CHALLENGING DIALOGUES AT WORK: RACE, SEX, RELIGION
What do you say to the employee who perceives injustice? What about the employee who's not fitting in with the team? How do you build trust among employees for whom differences of race, sex, religion or sexual orientation may be subtle barriers to effective communication? OIE is excited to offer this three hour workshop for supervisors and managers. Through working with a professional actor, participants will have the opportunity to sharpen their skills for sensitive conversations.

Harassment Prevention 101
Duke University and Duke University Health System are committed to sustaining an inclusive and respectful work environment, free from unlawful discrimination and harassment. Education and awareness of basic principles related to harassment prevention go far in creating and furthering a respectful workplace.
This presentation will provide both an overview of Duke’s harassment policy, as well as practical strategies for minimizing the perception of harassment. The session will also include examples of behaviors and situations that might violate the harassment policy and options for responding. Case scenarios and a short videotape will be used to reinforce the material.
Effectively Investigating Complaints of Harassment (Designed for Managers)
As a manager or supervisor, harassment concerns or complaints are likely to be initially raised with you. Are you prepared to effectively respond to or, if necessary, conduct an investigation of a harassment complaint? This session will provide a comprehensive review of the Duke Harassment Policy complaint handling procedures and “best practices” for responding to harassment complaints. Case scenarios and a short videotape will be used to reinforce the material.
FILM SERIES
RACE: POWER OF AN ILLUSION - PART 1
Everyone can tell a Nubian from a Norwegian, so why not divide people into different races? That's the question explored in "The Difference Between Us." This episode investigates biological grouping and follows a dozen students of different backgrounds who sequence and compare their own DNA to see who is more genetically similar - with surprising results. The episode also explores several scientific discoveries that illustrate why humans cannot be subdivided into races.

RACE: POWER OF AN ILLUSION, PART 2
It's true that race has always been with us, right? Wrong. Ancient peoples stigmatized "others" on the grounds of language, custom, class, and especially religion, but not according to physical differences. The concept of race is a recent invention, and the film "The Story We Tell" traces the origins of the racial idea to the European conquest of the new world and to the American slave system - the first ever where all the slaves shared similar physical traits and a common ancestry.

RACE: POWER OF AN ILLUSION, PART 3
If race doesn't exist biologically, what is it? And why should it matter? Our final episode, "The House We Live In" is the first film about race to focus not on individual attitudes and behaviors, but on the ways our institutions and policies advantage some groups at the expense of others. The film begins by examining the massive immigration from eastern and southern Europe in the early 20th century. Italians, Hebrews, Greeks and other ethnics were considered by many to be separate races. Their desire for citizenship was in direct conflict with the 1790 Naturalization Act, which limited naturalized citizenship to "free, white persons."

WORLDS APART, PART I & PART 2
This engaging two part series explores cross-cultural concerns that can arise when patients and health care professionals come together with different perspectives on health, illness and medicine. The sessions investigate how conflicts develop and how you can enhance your competence to manage cross-cultural concerns in a respectful, open-minded manner.

EQUITY & EMPLOYMENT: BUILDING AN INCLUSIVE WORK CULTURE
This interactive session for supervisors is designed to both support Duke's commitment to diversity and to teach the fundamentals of key employment laws. You will learn how policies and practices help ensure an equitable and productive work environment for all. By addressing harassment prevention, reasonable accommodations, equal opportunity/affirmative action and sustaining an inclusive work culture, this session provides Duke managers with the basics for managing an equitable and productive work team.
