Freshman campaign statements posted at September 24 2007, 03:14 pm
Class of 2011, heree are YOUR candidates for freshman class president!

Elections are this Friday, September 28 at the E-social at Twinnie's, from 4-6 PM!

Chao Yin:
Hi, my name is Chao Yin, a potential BME major from Virginia looking for ways to get involved with Pratt. One of my greatest qualities is friendliness. I am willing to meet new people and am always approachable for new suggestion and ideas. In high school, my leadership experiences consist of orchestra president, French honors secretary, Tri-M music honors member-at-large, and swim team captain. My main focus will be placed on organizing social events to help form lasting bonds and friendships amongst Pratt students of all majors.

Jason Liu:
I want to be the 2011 president because I want to represent the best interests of the 2011 engineers; I want to be the person who leads by example and serves with dignity, honor, and respect. I am someone who does everything above and beyond. My only flaw is that I care too much about my fellow engineers. With the resources granted to me, I want to create more unity and happiness among us engineers with socials (any sort of social, whether a pizza party, a dinner, a dance, or hell even a paintball outing). I want to know each and every one of you guys and be there for anything.

Phillip Danser:
"In the words of ESG, I want to become your class president because I LOVE YOU. Beyond endless amounts of love, however, I will represent you as a strong voice within ESG. I am involved in many aspects of Pratt. I am a part of the Engineering Frontiers focus cluster, I represent Industry Relations for the Smart Home project, and have attended every E-Social thus far. Because I am largely involved in Pratt life, I am available to meet and discuss with my fellow classmates. I want to hear your input and I want you to comment on mine. During my term, I will bring campus activities to the freshman class. They will include good times, quality food, croquet, and more good times."

Mark Elstein:
Dear Pratt Engineering Freshmen,

I would like to be Freshman President of Engineering Student Government (ESG) because I am passionate about engineering, and would love to represent the interests of all freshman engineering students and plan and organize our events. I am working towards a dual major with Electrical/Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science (CS). I am currently on the House Council for my residence hall, Randolph, as the OIT/Technology committee chair and a floor representative. I am really interested in engineering clubs like the SmartHome and Robotics. Please vote for me for ESG Freshman President for the best Pratt year ever! Please check out my Website at http://www.duke.edu/~mpe3/vote/esg for more info and updates.

Sincerely yours, Mark Elstein

Will Sennett:
My campaign is centered around the ideals of Education, Unification, and Fair Representation. First, I want to EDUCATE, not in terms of academics, but rather in terms of middle and long term goals. Many engineers will change their minds about what they want to do, and I want to make sure that everyone is in a field they genuinely enjoy. Therefore, I want to bring in graduates from various fields, to give students an idea of what is out there. The worst thing that can happen is if in four years one realizes that they really aren't where they want to be. I also want to UNIFY, and make sure the CEEs, BMEs, ECEs, and MEs get to know each other. After this year, schedules will become more varied. Before then, it is important to form bonds with those in other fields. This goes with my belief that problems in the next fifty years will not be solved by one discipline alone, but will require cooperation across many fields. Finally, I want REPRESENTATION. We Freshman make up a quarter of the engineers, but nothing is catered to us. All events are on West Campus, in the Engineering quad, which is about as far as you can get from East Campus. I think that we deserve more than that, and that at the very least, engineering events should be brought to East, and that the upperclassman should have to walk. If I am elected, I will make improvements to benefit us freshman, and will make sure that we, the class of 2011, have its fair say. Vote for me, Will Sennett.

Dear Dean Johnson,
I would like to thank you on the behalf of ESG for all your help and support during your time at Duke. You played a very important role in guiding us not only in the scope of the organization itself but about our careers as well. You will be deeply missed by Pratt and ESG. We wish you the best of luck at your new position at Johns Hopkins. Thank you for being an amazing mentor to all of us.

Best, ESG

GENERAL ELECTION

Executive Vice President

Leslie Voorhees (2008)

I am writing to express my enthusiasm in becoming the next Executive Vice-President. I have enjoyed how ESG has given me opportunities to use my leadership and creativity this past semester in planning events that are inspiring and fun. I have many ideas I want to see happen soon, such as E-Benches, a community service fair, more inter-major socials/competitions, an East-Campus E-Social, a fall sporting event, and much more! I have brought new insight and change this past semester and hope to continue making the Pratt experience even more enjoyable for all engineers!

Craig Silverman (2008)

It is my goal as Executive Vice President to bring more engineering firms to Duke University to recruit you for internships and full-time positions. I will work with professors and the Career Center to network and bring the companies to you. I know the engineering world outside the classroom because I interned last summer. Dutifully serving as Social Chair for the Biomedical Engineering Society has prepared me well. I am hard working, diligent, and persistent. Last of all and most importantly, I know engineers because I spend so much time in Teer. Vote for Craig for Vice President, or die.

Secretary

Maggie Abernathy (2008)

While my cursive is simply beautiful and I’m great at taking meticulous notes, that is not at all the reason I am so enthused to run for ESG Secretary. I want to be able to sign all my emails- ESG LOVES YOU!!... ESG has thus far done a great job of showing their dedication to hard-working engineers, and I want to be able to bring more fresh ideas to the table. Let’s increase professor-student interaction in a social light, have more intra-engineer “friendly” competitions (like the softball game) that require us Teer-basement devotees to play in the grassy field of the quad, and just enjoy those Duke moments that leave you with a smile. I’ll work long hours to get the job done, as I’ve done in my studies and activities, and I’m asking for your support for ESG Secretary. See you at the polls on Wednesday!

Sahil Patel (2009)

This past year, I have served as Secretary for ESG. I have gained experience with how ESG runs, allowing me to focus on implementing new ideas next year. These new ideas focus on helping the Pratt community with real life issues. For example, I would like to continue with my project of creating an idea book used to help students generate ideas for patents, a project implemented successfully at Stanford. I would also like to push for greater communication between upperclassmen and lowerclassmen to help lowerclassmen choose courses. Finally, I hope to increase Pratt student involvement in the community, giving students a chance to implement what they learn for a practical, beneficial purpose. Overall, my goal is to increase the opportunities for Pratt students to become more active and better prepared for the future.

Treasurer

Allen Keel (2008)

Vote Allen Keel for Treasurer to put your money to good use. I am a Junior in Mechanical Engineering, and with my second major in Economics I should know how to manage it well. Among other things, I want newer, better food in the rotating vending machine in Teer, and I?ll push for one in Hudson. I?ve had experience with leadership positions, and I love Pratt enough to recruit students to us through Duke Ambassadors. Thank you, and please vote on Wednesday.

Andrew Tutt (2009)

Engineering Student Government has always done an excellent job managing its money and managing the activities toward which it spends that money. My policy, without overstepping my authority, will be to fund activities, organizations, and events which tangibly benefit engineers. As Treasurer, I will keep the ESG accounts in order and up-to-date. I think that I am qualified to serve as Treasurer. I invite those who do not know me well to look me up on the Facebook, where you can find a detailed list of my activities, interests, and opinions. Thanks, and I hope to receive your vote.

David Wang (2009)

I am running for ESG Treasurer because I want to help ESG become more than a social sponsor. ESG currently holds a reputation of spending its money on e-socials, t-shirts, and the e-prom. There are many very interesting endeavors that ESG could support with its large budget, including student projects and community service. I believe I am suited for this position because I am knowledgeable about the desires of Pratt students. I was treasurer for Aycock House Council last year so I am familiar with Duke’s system to transfer money. I am also an economics double major planning to take accounting courses next semester, which will help me manage ESG’s finances.

FRESHMEN ELECTION

Class of 2010 President

Rita Lin

There are many, but I guess the main reason I’m running for ESG Class of 2010 President is that I want to be there for my friends; I feel like I could represent our class really well, really fairly. I have a relatively easy course load this semester, so I’ll have a lot of time for ESG. I’m friendly, honest, hard-working, dependable, organized, and I’ve had leadership experience being the biology club president and volleyball team captain in high school. Basically, I want to get more involved in Pratt in this way, and hopefully get to know every Prattster in our class before we graduate. Thanks!

Patrick Ye

Hello fellow freshmen engineers. I am running as your ESG class representative because I believe I can get things done. I am highly organized (ask to look at my handbook calendar), eager to meet fellow classmates, and most importantly, loud voiced so my opinions won’t be overrun by upperclassmen. Outside of engineering homework, I helped lead Southgate to winning the Eco-Olympics, and I am heavily involved with Engineers Without Borders, where I helped design and build a peanut shell oven. I am happy to listen to what you want from ESG, and don’t forget to vote this Wednesday!

SOPHOMORE ELECTION

Class of 2009 President

Alex Gorham

I am running for the position of 09 class president to improve student conditions in Pratt. Issues I hope to address include: - hosting workshops that explore what it takes to get into med/grad school, how to land a job at prestigious engineering firms, and what makes a qualified consultant - working with OIT to decrease those annoying Firefox error messages - collaborating with administrators to make waitlist policies more clear - ordering more M t-shirts and less XL Some of my qualifications for the position are Cru social chair, Wind Symphony treasurer, Brownstone secretary, FAC, and EGR 53 TA.

Daniel Klein

Hi, my name is Daniel Klein, and I want to serve as your ESG class president. Promoting student-professor interaction, facilitating connections between students and alumni to obtain internships, stimulating the rise of engineering-related student organizations, and expanding E-Socials to encourage greater participation I hope to enhance the Pratt experience. I’m very familiar with the school, and my experience as fraternity social chair, member of Engineers Without Borders, and organizer of academic clubs in high school has provided me with exceptional leadership experience. I plan to work my hardest to provide the best possible experience for Duke’s engineering class of 2009.

Shravan Verma

I am majoring in BME/EE. Improving Pratt facilities and strengthening the Pratt community are my biggest concerns. If elected, I would like to implement online access to most of the science course notes and also, a video archive of some class lectures. I plan to organize concessions on shows to get a really needed break for the engineering students and also initiate a set of discussion forums for specific classes to help working on problem sets. I am currently the Vice-President of BMES, bringing BME majors closer and organizing meetings with leading biomedical firms. I can easily be contacted in times of need or just to say hi through email, phone, and AIM. So, “Help me to help you!”

JUNIOR ELECTION

Class of 2008 President

Lee Pearson

From experience as Engineers Without Borders president, I have the ability to see ideas through to results. Here are some items I will pursue: a variety of beer options at E-social (New Castle, Sam Adams); a variety of other drink options (smoothies); tours of West Campus tunnels (should get an email next week); free dinners with Duke Conversations to bring in engaging speakers or potentially lucrative employer connections; facilitating use of existing Duke conference funding for seniors with research projects; increased corporate networking opportunities; increased faculty/student interaction with targeted events; funding for senior projects. Let's make it happen. Vote LEE.

Karli Spetzler

My strongest attribute is enthusiasm- I like being an engineer. Being an engineer has been a really important part of my Duke career, and I want to ensure that all engineering students get the most out of their Pratt experience. I see Pratt as a community; we share the labs, hours in Teer, and e-socials. While I am eager to see this community grow, I also think it is important that we not be isolated from the rest of Duke. As Class of 2008 president, I want to see the Pratt community grow stronger and with Duke. My enthusiasm can make this happen.

Kyle Squillario

I am running for Senior Class President because I want to continue the work that I have done as both the Sophomore Class President and the Executive Vice President of ESG. During my last two years on ESG I have been involved in the planning and executing of numerous events such as the fall and spring picnics, weekly E-socials, and the annual spring softball game. Over the past two years I have been able to work with the administration in order to change student life for the better, and I would continue to do more of the same as Senior Class President. In addition, there are a number of new ideas including the creation of a Pratt Student Golf Outing and the return of bagels one morning a week that I would like the opportunity to implement in the future.
