The European Union Center of Duke University will host French EU Commission official Dr. Olivier Brunet as a Visiting Scholar for the 2001-2002 academic year. Olivier Brunet has been with the European Commission since 1989. From 1999 to 2001 he coordinated a large process of evaluation of the EU education programme SOCRATES. He organised regular consultations of the European associations (teachers, students, parents), the social partners and the foundations in the field of education. In 1998-1999 Mr Brunet worked in the field of environment. From 1989 to 1998 his appointments with the Commission were related to the social policy. He initially worked in Luxemburg in the field of health and safety at work where he monitored the implementation of the EU legislation and promoted the cooperation between the Labour Inspectorates of the EU Member States. He then supported the activities of social partners at a European level mainly focusing on the promotion of social dialogue in Central and Eastern Europe. He was involved in the first European negotiation between social partners on parental leave and in the development of an "inter-regional social dialogue." Before joining the Commission Mr Brunet worked ten years in France as an "inspecteur du travail" (factory inspector). He was in charge of enforcing legislation on working conditions and led important industrial negotiations on wages and employment issues. He also taught labour law at the University of Brest (France). Mr Brunet studied law in Paris and Brest (France). He has a "maitrise de droit public". His publications are mainly relating to the contribution of the social partners in the enlargement process of the European Union and to the involvement of the civil society in education. He wrote a Commission report on the implementation of the programme SOCRATES (1995-1999) and contributed to the "White paper" on the European governance.
In October 2000, the Duke Center for European Studies gained a permanent new home as part of the newly created John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies. Our street address and fax numbers have changed, but our phone numbers and box number remain the same. Please drop by and check out our new digs! 2204
