european union fellowship

We are pleased to announce the 2000-2001 Academic Year European Union Graduate Fellowship competition that is being administered by the Duke University European Union Center.

The European Union Center will be awarding one fellowship to a graduate student whose research is concerned with public policy, political, economic, or cultural integration in the European Union.  This award is funded by the European Commission in Brussels and it is a non-service fellowship open to graduate students enrolled at Duke.  Both U.S. citizens and non U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.  The awardee can be enrolled in full-time coursework at Duke or spend the academic year in Europe conducting dissertation research.

Under the terms of the fellowship program, as specified by the European Commission, the EU Graduate Fellowship consists of a stipend of $10,000.00.  There are opportunities for additional funds for travel.  According to the fellowship program guidelines, the recipient may not be required to contribute to the cost of his or her tuition and fees from personal resources.  Since the Center cannot provide for the recipient's tuition and required fees, departments that nominate candidates automatically make the commitment to pay the tuition and fees of their student if that student happens to obtain the EU Graduate Fellowship.

Please note that availability of the European Union Graduate Fellowship will be contingent upon confirmation of funding renewal received by the center from the European Commission.

Applicants should send the following to the EU Center, at the above address, and no later than Friday, March 17, 2000:

1.  An application letter containing personal (name, address, phone, e-mail, citizenship) and  academic (department/field of study, degrees completed, anticipated date of Ph.D. completion) information;

2.  A brief (1,000 words or less) statement of the dissertation project.  If the research involves use of language other than English, please include a description of the relevant language training or preparation;

3.  A letter of recommendation from the candidate's academic advisor;

4.  A letter of nomination from the candidate's Director of Graduate Studies.
