summer 2001 foreign language and area studies (FLAS) fellowships Deadline: March 9, 2001 We are pleased to announce that the Duke Center for European Studies has available several non-service Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for Duke graduate students for the 2001 summer session. Each award provides a stipend of $2,400 and a remission of tuition and registration fees up to $3,600 for one summer intensive language course. The purpose of the Summer FLAS Fellowships is to permit graduate students to study readily available or less commonly taught modern European languages on an intensive basis. The degree of intensity must be equivalent to covering a full academic year's worth of language instruction (minimum of 120 contact hours of instruction for advanced language study and minimum of 140 hours for beginning/intermediate language study) in the summer. Applicants are encouraged to attend a formal program that is a minimum of 6 weeks in length. We will assign lowest consideration in the selection of fellows to applicants who plan to study French, German, Spanish or Italian. We will consider a Summer FLAS in these languages only under special circumstances. Priority will be given to individuals who plan to study a less commonly taught European language at all levels. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR SUMMER FLAS FELLOWSHIPS: 1. Recipients must be full-time students in a Duke graduate or professional degree program during the regular academic years preceding and following this award; 2. Recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; 3. Recipients must be of very high professional promise; 4. Rationale must exist for why study of the language chosen by applicant will contribute to the professional development of the candidate. In addition, applicants should be aware that FLAS guidelines stipulate that Fellows planning to study a language overseas during the fellowship period must already possess intermediate level language skills prior to departure. Beginning level training can be funded only if courses are unavailable in the U.S. Because of the complicated nature of the FLAS guidelines, students interested in applying are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to consult with Jennifer Edgerton (684-6442), Assistant Coordinator for European Studies, prior to submitting their application. We are pleased, therefore, to invite
applications for the 2001 Summer FLAS Fellowships. Neil De Marchi and David Bell
