Duke University Motorsports is an entirely student-run group that designs and builds open wheel racecars to compete in the Formula SAE competition. Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is an open wheel racecar competition that attracts over 140 schools and thousands of students annually. The concept behind the competition is that a fictional automotive manufacturer has tasked student design teams with designing and building a prototype race car that could ultimately be produced and marketed to a weekend autocross racing enthusiast. The team that produces the best overall package wins. Competition events include racing, design, cost and marketing. This variety allows students to gain practice and understanding with all areas of engineering in industry. During competition, industry experts from the likes of GM, Ford, and Daimler-Chrysler judge students in these various Dynamic and Static events and offer invaluable tips for further development/improvement.
