Fabulous events in past years:

2005-2006

  • Discussion Night on Reparative Therapy; or, Can you change gay people into raging heterosexuals?
Several conservative pundits have been espousing the value of reparative therapy, which claims to change gay folks into heterosexuals. We thought it might be nice to discuss a recent academic paper that claims this therapy works to learn more about these arguments. As well, we've invited Tim Strauman, a professor from psychology, and Robin Burhke, a psychologist at CAPS, to serve as resources for the discussion.

  • Discussion night on recent pheremone study!
We thought it would be fun to have a low-key event where we discuss the recent paper that found biological differences in how gay men responded to pheromones compared to straight men and straight women. Kevin LaBar, a Duke professor of neuroscience, joined us as a resource for our discussion.

2004-2005

  • Gay and Republican? Patrick Guerriero, President of Log Cabin Republicans, discussed the impact of anti-gay marriage amendments and the need for inclusion in the Republican Party and in general political discourse. Co-sponsors included the Political Science Department, the University Fund, the University Union, the Graduate and Professional Student Council, Duke Law Republicans, OutLaw, the Fuqua School Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Alliance, the Duke Bar Association, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Triangle Log Cabin Republicans, AQUADuke, and the Sanford Institute for Public Policy.
  • Michael Fleming, Executive Director of the David Bohnett Foundation, joined us for informal discussion. The David Bohnett Foundation is a non-profit committed to improving society through social activism.

  • DukeOUT hosted its opening event on Thursday, September 2nd from 7 to 11 pm in the LGBT Center in the West Union Building. Guests enjoyed a jazz band, food, and scores of people with whom to mingle.

2003-2004

  • DukeOUT and OutLaw put a spotlight on marriage rights this April, featuring a discussion with Julie Goodrich, plaintiff in the Massachusetts case for same-sex marriage, and a debate over same-sex marriage featuring attorneys from Lambda Legal (pro) and Alliance Defence Fund (con).
  • Joseph Bertolotti, Co-Director of GLBT Sales and Talent Program at IBM, described the way that companies have attempted to reach out to the LGBT community. Cosponsored by DukeOUT and Fuqua GLSA.

  • Rev. William Avon Keen, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Virginia, spoke at a the Law School to remember Rev. Martin Luther King's and discuss the tradition of civil disobedience.

  • DukeOUT presented All About My Father (2002), followed by discussion with the subject, Esben Esther Pirelli Benestad, and Benestad's wife, Elsa Amas. Benestad is a bigendered physician, author, and advocate for uncommon people. This unique documentary was made by Benestad's grown son, Even, and it delves deeply into the family's experiences. Sponsored by DukeOut with support from the Center for LGBT Life, Women’s Studies, GPSC, Film and Video, Center for Documentary Studies, CAPS, Studies in Sexuality, Women’s Center, Center for International Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Franklin Humanities Institute, and Duke Institute of the Arts with funding from the Eleanor Naylor Dana Endowment.

  • Our spring kickoff event this year was held at Ringside. One hundred DukeOUT guests enjoyed the four floors of live music, DJs on our bill. It was such a great experience, we did it again at the end of the term to celebrate the summer.
