Advocacy Work
Over the past several years, DukeOUT has worked to improve the state of
LGBT life at Duke. Partnering with the Graduate and Professional
Student
Council (GPSC) and the undergraduate group AQUADuke, DukeOUT has
detailed its concerns to senior administrators. The following list
includes recent memos
and meetings and a brief explanation of each.
- DukeOUT formed in Fall 2002 from the vestiges of a
previous group, QueerGrads. After its formation, it worked with GPSC to
describe the current state of LGBT life for graduate students.
Memo
from
December 12, 2002
- When meeting with the Provost, he suggested writing a
longer memo
that discussed the concerns from each school individually. This
resulted
in the following, which covers each school in turn:
Memo
from June 18, 2003
- The Provost brought the June memo to the Deans
Cabinet, which includes the Dean of every school and the Provost, to
discuss ways to improve LGBT life. Teresa Sakash and Rob Saunders
represented DukeOUT and provided this executive summary for the Deans:
Executive Summary for Deans Cabinet meeting
- DukeOUT and AQUADuke sponsored a dinner discussion in
Spring 2004 that explored joint undergrad/grad concerns. From this
discussion, we wrote to the newly elected President Brodhead to
introduce him to LGBT life and provide an overview of current concerns.
Memo
to Dr. Brodhead
from May 20, 2004
- DukeOUT and AQUADuke members met with President
Brodhead to explore
LGBT life and discuss ways we could work together. Four people
attended:
Teresa Sakash, a law student and coordinator of DukeOUT,
Jonathan Wells, the Vice-President of AQUADuke, Brian West, the
president of AQUADuke, and Rob Saunders, a graduate student and DukeOUT
board member. We covered three broad topics--general environment,
community, and academic scholarship. The executive summary highlights
the main points raised in this meeting.
