Administrative Approval

The first step in implementing a recovery program is obtaining administrative approval. In some cases, this will also be the most difficult task. In starting 'Duke Recovers' I encountered a huge amount of resistance to starting a recovery program and was told 'No' about a dozen times from various parties before I was finally given the go ahead. Persistence in this arena is key!

Also key is having the correct approach to convincing the administration. We suggest having a presentation ready in order to help persuade the naysayers. Even if you don't have a presentation, though, you should try to stress the following points which proved invaluable in obtaining approval for 'Duke Recovers'.

Arguments for Program Initiation

  • Feedback from inventory will give administration an accurate gauge of sources of waste in case packs (packs prepared for individual cases). This proved to be the strongest aspect of 'Duke Recovers' and has saved Duke Hospital thousands of dollars.
  • The program will save money in incineration/waste disposal costs due to reduction in volume of waste generated.
  • Already been successfully implemented in many hospitals with legal precedence.
  • Excellent Public Relations value for the hospital.

Lastly, if you find the resistance to be insurmountable with the above arguments, the Director of Sterile Processing here at Duke has agreed to talk with Director of Sterile Processing/Waste Disposal at your institution. If necessary, have your director call (919) 681-4153 and ask for Bill Dennis.
