Frequently Asked Questions

Who actually recovers the supplies?

As illustrated in the Design section of this website, the recovery path can take one of two tracts. Each method has its advantages and the optimal solution will vary from hospital to hospital. The tracts are as follows:

  • Nurses collect and set aside the supplies left over on the case cart. The supplies are then stored in a convenient location until the volunteers are able to inventory, sort and package the supplies.
  • Disposal technicians in the sterile processing department sift through the materials and set aside those which have not been contaminated. The supplies are then stored as above.

How Frequently Will Volunteers Need to Sort the Materials?

Typically, volunteers need to sort, inventory and package the supplies once or twice a week. If storage space is a scarcity, then stored recovered supplies may need to be sorted three times a week. Currently, we operate with two sessions a week and the three to four volunteers present are done in about an hour and a half.

Where do we Send the Supplies?

Under the Charity heading, you will find a list of charities that will accept donations of non-contaminated medical supplies. Many more charities exist and the best option is frequently to simply call potential programs (starting with those on the list based on your location) and ask them if they, or another charity they know of, would like to receive your supplies.
