The 17th annual Biological Sciences Graduate Student Symposium will be held on Friday, November 14th, 2008. This year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species,' as well as the upcoming 200th birthday of Charles Darwin himself.
We are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Robert M. Hazen, Senior Research Scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science and Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University. His research has focused on origins of life topics, and it is for this reason we are happy he has accepted our invitation to come and speak. His unique perspective on academia and science education will be beneficial not only for graduate students considering their future career paths, but for post-docs and faculty as well. We will kick-off the symposium on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 at 4:30 PM in Love Auditorium in the Levine Science Research Center (LSRC) with a special technical lecture. Dr. Hazen will be presenting his own work, "Right and Left: Mineral Surfaces, Molecular Selection, and the Origin of Life's Homochirality." All graduate students, post-docs, faculty and undergraduates are encouraged to attend. On Friday November 14th, 2008 at 8:45 AM we will commence at the Bryan Research Building with breakfast, followed by presentations in the main lecture hall of Bryan. The oral presentations will be by Duke University graduate students from the biological sciences departments. A poster session and lunch will be held in the Hall of Science of the LSRC C-wing where the work of graduate students will be featured. The day will conclude with an address by Dr. Hazen, back at the Bryan Research Building lecture hall, "Themes and Variations in Complex Evolving Systems, or Should you Believe in Evolution?" There is much to be gained in coming to all or part of the event: check out the research going on around you at Duke and hear the perspective of Dr. Hazen on science education and academia. Come out to enjoy a free breakfast and lunch, earn an honorarium and gain valuable experience by presenting your work to your peers, or be eligible for monetary prizes by submitting a poster. We look forward to seeing you there! Please register abstracts of presentations, posters, or cover art for the abstract book and peruse the schedule at the links below. Further announcements and information on this year's keynote speaker will be found at the links above. |
