Greek Orthodox Monasteries
in North Carolina
We are blessed to have two Greek Orthodox monasteries in North Carolina, close enough to Durham: Panagia Prousiotissa, a women's monastery and Panagia Pammakaristos, a men's monastery. Both are dedicated to our Most-Holy Theotokos and, in particular, to some of her well-known miraculous icons (both monasteries have painted copies). The monasteries are under our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and were founded by Elder Efraim of the Monastery of Philotheou in Mount Athos. Elder Efraim has currently 16 monasteries under his spiritual direction in U.S.A. and Canada. All of them were founded during the last 10 years, indicating a growing interest in Orthodox Monasticism.
We all know that monasteries were always "beacons" of Orthodoxy and homes of many Saints. We also know how monasteries helped the Greek nation during the 400 years of Turkish occupation and preserved our faith, language and traditions. The fact that monasticism is now growing in the States as well is something special for all of us and bring us even closer to the faith and traditions of our Fathers.
Pilgrims (both men and women) are welcome to the monasteries. The addresses, telephone numbers and driving directions from Durham are given below. Please, contact the monasteries before visiting. Appropriate dressing is required for a visit. Facilities are still limited since both monasteries started last October. However, the generous hospitality compensates for that. All monks and nuns speak both Greek and English. Services are all in Greek and are held regularly according to the Athonite Typicon of Mount Athos. Services are all in Greek. Contact directly the monasteries for the exact schedule.
