Reggie Day
Annually, the Reggies host a major program in keeping with in the legacy of Reginaldo Howard, Duke's first Black student body president. Although Reggie Howard's life was tragically cut short when he was involved in a car accident, his memory still lives on today in our “Reggie Day” programming.
This year's "Reggie Day" topic questions the validity of the claim that America has entered a post-race moment due to the outcome of the election. In light of Barack Obama's historic presidential campaign, people in the U.S. and around the world may point to this political cycle as proof that American politics have successfully transcended race. Considering our national culture, the global perspective, and life at Duke, how realistic is the notion that we have entered a post-race moment? What would that moment look like? What implications does this have for political movements and race relations moving forward?
Past Reggie Day topics include:
- In light of President Obama's election, is America finally post-race? (2009)
- The Future of Race-Based Admissions in an Era of Class Based Initiatives (2008)
- The Duke Lacrosse Scandal and the Campus Culture (2007)
- History of Black Student Activism at Duke (2006)
