After graduation, he plans to take a year off, working at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland while applying to MD PhD programs. Besides going to class, Jawara spends a lot of his time working with high school kids in the community. He currently tutors Durham high school students in math and science through a program called "chance". Jawara also enjoys working to improve his Spanish speaking skills by volunteering with Hispanic organizations in the Durham community and attending a bimonthly Spanish-speaking club called Pura Vida.

The Reginaldo Howard Scholarship has impacted Jawara's life in several positive ways. It has given him an outlet to participate in community service at Duke, and has also enabled him to meet many people who share his passion for helping others. For Jawara, the Reginaldo Howard Scholarship is more than just a means to an excellent education, it is a program that has allowed him to broaden his horizons and explore many aspects of both the Duke and Durham communities.
